RESEARCH INTEREST
Professor Takahashi has specialized in human/social geography, in particular geographical theories of society and space, focusing city and countryside of the contemporary world including Japan, China and Indonesia. His primary research interests are:
- Changing rural societies and regions,
- Community development in city and countryside,
- Natural hazard and disaster risk reduction.
Recently, he has been engaged in integrated researches on the 2004 Sumatra earthquake and tsunami, the recovery processes in its aftermaths, and socio-spatial restructuring in the post-recovery period, mainly focusing on Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, Indonesia. His research has further extended to issues of disaster in general, in particular the community-based disaster risk reduction in underdeveloped regions including Indonesia and China, and also in towns and villages of coastal northeast and southwest Japan.
